Coral Springs, a city in Broward County, Florida is renowned for its family-friendly atmosphere and tranquil suburban lifestyle. Located northwest of the city of Fort Lauderdale and south of the city of Boca Raton, the City of Coral Springs holds the distinction of being one of the truly planned family communities in the South Florida area. The City of Coral Springs was founded in the early 1960s by real estate developers James S. Hunt and Joe Taravella of Coral Ridge Properties. The two envisioned Coral Springs as a planned city for the future with plenty of ample lots for housing, as well as public buildings featuring a colonial brick motif. In 1961 Coral Ridge Properties purchased thousands of acres of land from the Lyons family and chartered the City of Coral Springs in 1963. To maintain the new city’s aesthetics, both Hunt and Taravella called for strict building codes.
Coral Ridge Properties was purchased by the Westinghouse Electric Company in 1966 and the new owners created “Electric Lab Houses” in their new city of Coral Springs, featuring state-of-the-art appliances, along with such innovative conveniences as motion detectors and intercoms. Spanning over 24 square miles of land, the City of Coral Springs has a population of approximately 135,000, far exceeding Hunt and Taravella’s original plans for a population of 50,000. The building of the Sawgrass Expressway in the late 1980s, providing north and south access to the city on its western boundaries, boosted the City of Coral Springs population even more.
While many elements around the community have changed since its inception sixty years ago, the City of Coral Springs still maintains strict building codes today and the community also remains a very family friendly area. There are over 19 public schools located in the Coral Springs area today, including Taravella High School, which was named in honor of one of the city’s founders.
