Meet Paul Wilson, Founder and Owner of Tru Colors Contracting. Paul founded Tru Colors with his wife Lori in 2010. The two currently reside in South Florida. Paul is the father of five and has two daughters and three sons. Born in Los Angeles, CA, Paul has been a resident of South Florida since the age of eight. His family moved here from New Jersey, where he lived most of his early life. Paul’s also a graduate of Coconut Creek High School and played on the school’s football and wrestling teams.
Paul’s been in the commercial and residential paint business for more than two decades and originally founded Armstrong Custom Painting and Pressure Cleaning in 1999. “I was upset with the paint jobs at my home and wanted a far better look. I finally came across some friends from high school who were painters and they initially showed me the ropes,” commented Paul. Not only did he learn the best traits about painting a house, he also ended up partnering with one of the painters founding Armstrong Custom Painting.
“I have an obsessive-compulsive behavior and I like things done right. I started Armstrong because I was an irate customer and I did not like the way people were doing the paint jobs at my house, or the floors at my warehouses and storage places. At the time I owned a high-end wholesale car operation and was also looking to find a business to get into, since I was in the process of selling my car business,” Paul added.
The auto dealership Paul owned was a dealer-to-dealer wholesale company located in Deerfield Beach with clients throughout the country. “I actually used to import Harley Davidsons and convertibles back in the 1990’s from Europe. I spent a lot of time in Germany and lived on and off in Frankfurt for about a year,” commented Paul.
Paul remained involved with Armstrong for almost a decade but took a hiatus from the company from 2008 to 2010, when he assisted Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines with the building of the island of Labadie in Haiti. During this period of time, Paul sold his interest in Armstrong.
Throughout the time he was working on the Labadie project, Paul would periodically come back to South Florida. It was on one of his return visits to South Florida that Paul would meet his wife Lori in July 2009. The two of them not only joined together in matrimony, but also founded Tru Colors Contracting in 2010.
“The name of the company became Tru Colors for two reasons: One we thought Tru Colors would be a great name for a paint company. What’s more, everyone shows you their Tru Colors, and who they really are,” Paul noted. Contrary to speculation, the Tru Colors Contracting name is not inspired by the popular Cyndi Lauper song from the 1980’s. “While our name has nothing to do with the song, everyone does sing me True Colors when I tell them the name,” added Paul.
A world traveler, Paul has also spent a lot of time in Guadalajara, Mexico, Belgium and Holland. “For all my life I have loved to travel…I travel as far as I can and as fast as I can. I can live anywhere for 30 days with just a backpack,” he noted .
The South Florida area ranks high on Paul’s favorite destinations. “I love Florida, I’ve done many staycations here when you just go not as a resident, but as a vacationer and treat yourself like a tourist for a weekend. Some of those are the best vacations I’ve had. It’s great you don’t have to deal with the inconvenience of traveling, commented Paul.
“After all, we live in paradise. It’s amazing of the things we take for granted that others travel from everywhere to vacation in. I remember once spending a weekend on Fort Lauderdale Beach with my wife, it was like we were out of town. That’s the beautiful thing about living in Florida, we don’t act like tourists when we live here. It’s literally like going on vacation without the travel or hassle.”
Paul enjoys biking during his off time and loves watching football too. He’s a devout Pittsburgh Steelers fan and never misses a Steelers’ game. I did not grow up in Pittsburgh, I grew up in East Jersey and all my relatives were Eagles fans, so I became a Steelers fan just to annoy them. He’s looking forward to attending a Steelers game in Pittsburgh this fall. I can only go in September or October while the weather is warm.
Paul is very fond of the South Florida climate. I don’t like to go anywhere where it’s cold, including Orlando in January. In fact, I don’t like to go north of the Fort Pierce – Vero Beach barrier during the winter months, especially when the weather goes from tropical to subtropical.
When it comes to interesting things that have happened in his life. Paul recounts the time he was struck by lightening in 2007. I was biking at the time and when the lightning struck it gravitated towards the metal cleats on my shoes, knocking me out. Fortunately, I came through and am here to talk about. Nevertheless, It was an interesting experience, concluded Paul.
